July 1st Privacy Law Compliance Deadlines Near for California Colorado and Connecticut

Welcome to the home stretch for your insights organization's compliance with the new comprehensive consumer data privacy and security laws in California, Colorado and Connecticut, as we approach July 1, 2023.

  1. Although the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA) went into effect on January 1 of this year, the new regulations become enforceable on July 1. (UPDATE: A judge ruled on June 30, 2023 that while the law is now enforceable, the regulations cannot be enforced until March 2024.)
  2. The Colorado Privacy Act (CPA) comes into effect on July 1 as well, along with its new regulations.
  3. The Connecticut Data Privacy Act becomes effective on July 1 and the state Attorney General recently shared guidance for consumers.

Virginia's law (and amendments) already went into effect on January 1. Utah's law won't take effect until December 31, and there are more laws taking effect soon (because states are passing comprehensive privacy laws at a steady clip already this year).

In preparation, Insights Association members should review the laws/regulations, consult our earlier guidance, and remember that, as our outside counsel Stuart Pardau recently explained, privacy and data security compliance is manageable is manageable when you focus on these 5 things.
